Kristen Stewart is an American actress born on April 9, 1990, in Los Angeles, California.
Born and raised in Los Angeles to parents who both worked in the entertainment industry, Stewart first gained notice at age 12 for her role as the daughter of Jodie Foster’s character in David Fincher’s thriller Panic Room (2002).
She became a teen icon with the role of Bella Swan in the Twilight films, her success carrying over to features like Snow White and the Huntsman. Stewart went on to star in Still Alice and Café Society, before signing up for a reboot of Charlie’s Angels.
Early life and career
Her father, John,a stage manager, producer and director and mother, Jules,a scriptwriter immersed their daughter in the Hollywood scene at an early age. She made her first television appearance at the age of eight after her performance in a grade school Christmas play caught the eye of a talent scout. Shortly after, she landed a big role in the Disney Channel movie The Thirteenth Year (1999).
Since she was raised in a family who work in the entertainment industry as non-actors, Stewart thought she would become a screenwriter or a director, but never considered being an actor, saying: “I never wanted to be the center of attention—I wasn’t that ‘I want to be famous, I want to be an actor’ kid. I never sought out acting, but I always practiced my autograph because I love pens. I’d write my name on everything.”
Movies
Panic Room
Kristen Stewart’s career gained momentum when she secured a more significant role in the independent film “The Safety of Objects” (2001). However, her pivotal breakthrough came in 2002, when she was cast as the lead in the acclaimed thriller “Panic Room”, alongside esteemed actors Jodie Foster, Forest Whitaker, and Jared Leto.
Stewart’s portrayal of a complex and troubled teenager, struggling with diabetes, earned her widespread critical acclaim for her nuanced and impressive performance. The film’s commercial success was equally impressive, grossing a notable $95 million at the box office.
Cold Creek Manor
Kristen Stewart’s subsequent projects following Panic Room included the suspense drama Cold Creek Manor (2003), where she played the daughter of Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone’s characters. Despite solid performances from the cast, the film received negative reviews and underperformed at the box office.
Stewart’s next two films, the teen comedy Catch That Kid (2004) and the adventure film Undertow (2004), also failed to gain significant traction, with the latter receiving decent reviews but ultimately going straight to video. This string of less successful films marked a temporary setback in Stewart’s otherwise promising career.
‘Into the Wild,’ ‘The Cake Eaters’
Stewart showed her versatility as a performer in the Showtime special feature Speak (2005), about a teen who stops speaking after a sexual assault. That same year, she appeared in the sci-fi film Zathura, followed by the drama Fierce People (2006).
After appearing in several more mild box-office successes, Stewart landed the role of a teenage commune dweller in the critically acclaimed biopic Into the Wild (2007). The role brought Stewart back to the spotlight, and that same year she landed in Mary Stuart Masterson’s The Cake Eaters.
‘Twilight,’ ‘Adventureland,’ ‘The Runaways’
The year 2008 marked a significant turning point in Kristen Stewart’s career. She began by starring alongside Robert De Niro in the Hollywood satire “What Just Happened?” and then landed the coveted role of Bella Swan in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling book series “Twilight” (2008), opposite Robert Pattinson. The franchise’s massive following catapulted Stewart to A-List status, solidifying her position as a romantic icon for a generation of teenagers. Her newfound fame eclipsed her other projects, including the comedy “Adventureland” (2009), the drama “Welcome to the Rileys” (2009) alongside James Gandolfini, and her portrayal of Joan Jett in the biopic “The Runaways” (2010), co-starring Dakota Fanning.
Stewart’s success in “Twilight” cemented her status as a leading lady in Hollywood, overshadowing her other notable performances during this period.
‘Twilight’ Sequels and Romance With Robert Pattinson
The success of The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) surpassed its predecessor, garnering over $290 million at the domestic box office and further solidifying Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s status as Hollywood’s most sought-after young stars.
As their on-screen chemistry translated to a burgeoning off-screen romance, the pair found themselves at the center of intense media scrutiny, with speculation about their relationship dominating headlines. The frenzy surrounding their presumed romance only added to the franchise’s allure, cementing Stewart and Pattinson’s positions as international celebrities.
Three more Twilight films followed, ending with its finale in 2012. The last film, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, brought in more than $140 million in its opening weekend alone. In all, the Twilight movies earned more than $3 billion worldwide, according to the Box Office Mojo website.
Snow White and the Huntsman
In 2012, Kristen Stewart wrapped up the Twilight Saga and achieved box office success in another iconic role: Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman, alongside Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron. The film reimagined Snow White as a fierce warrior and became a summer blockbuster.
However, Stewart’s personal life faced intense scrutiny later that year when her affair with the film’s married director, Rupert Sanders, was exposed. She publicly apologized to her then-boyfriend Robert Pattinson, but the couple ultimately ended their relationship soon after.
Despite the public backlash, Stewart’s professional career continued to thrive, showcasing her resilience and dedication to her craft.
